New partnership between DentalSystems and Bitdefender

A recognised European antivirus, which we offer for your personal computers; in the practice, your computers are protected and monitored by us

An infected computer can block a practice's appointment book, patient files and imaging, but it can also empty a bank account or expose family photos at home. DentalSystems is a partner and reseller of Bitdefender, a European publisher of security software.

Bitdefender in a few words

Bitdefender is a Romanian company, founded in 2001 in Bucharest. Its software is used in more than 170 countries.

Its solutions regularly rank among the best in independent tests, such as those of the Austrian laboratory AV-Comparatives, which pits them against real attacks every year.

What Bitdefender does on a computer

  • It constantly scans files, programs and the web pages you open.
  • It blocks booby-trapped files and dangerous links before they do any damage.
  • It blocks phishing pages, those fake websites that imitate a bank or a supplier to steal your passwords.
  • It is designed to stop ransomware, the kind of program that encrypts your files to demand a ransom.
  • It updates itself automatically, without any action on your part.

For which computers?

In the practice, every computer we manage is protected by a more advanced solution, of the EDR type ("endpoint detection and response"). An antivirus blocks threats on the computer where it is installed. EDR protection goes further: it records what happens on the computer, spots abnormal activity, even if it has never been seen before, and makes it possible to respond remotely. We are the ones who monitor it and handle its alerts.

At home, it is different. The family computer or a practitioner's personal laptop is not under our day-to-day monitoring. It is for these computers that we offer Bitdefender: recognised, simple protection that works on its own. You do not have to compare offers: we supply the licence and install it.

A reminder in passing: a personal computer must not contain patient data. Patient files stay in the practice, on protected, backed-up computers.

The limits to be aware of

  • No antivirus stops everything. Even the best ones let a small share of attacks through in independent tests.
  • It does not protect against a stolen password. According to the Federal Office for Cyber Security (FOCS), many ransomware attacks in Switzerland come through devices that have not been updated or through stolen credentials. Updates and two-factor authentication remain essential.
  • It does not replace a backup. If an attack succeeds all the same, only a recent, separate backup makes it possible to get going again. In the practice, that is the role of our backups with Macrium.
  • It does not replace vigilance. A well-imitated fraudulent e-mail or a fake phone call can fool anyone. If in doubt, do not click and call us.

What we do for you

  • In the practice: monitored protection on every computer we manage, with no action needed on your part.
  • At home: a Bitdefender licence, supplied and installed by us, for your personal computers.
  • In both cases, our advice on what an antivirus does not cover: backups, updates, passwords.
